Previous reports have suggested the potential of low-dose γ-irradiation for treating autoimmune diseases. Building on this, we reviewed relevant research findings and proposed the potential application of radon inhalation for improving symptoms of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The results suggested that radon inhalation, similar to low-dose γ-irradiation, effectively balances Th1, Th2, and Th17 immune responses. This indicates its potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, along with associated symptom improvement in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, regarding its potential application for improving symptoms of COVID-19, we proposed investigating the combined effects of radon therapy with anti-rheumatic drugs and practical therapeutic agents.
Key words: radon inhalation; immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects; autoimmune and inflammatory disease; COVID-19
