拡散型霧箱には謎が多い。α線は10ナノ秒以下で通過し終えるが,その飛跡が数十ミリ秒の時間で伸びて行くのが目に見える。また,α線の通過方向とは反対の方向に飛跡が伸びるという信じ難い現象を見出した。後者の現象を検討した結果,α線の通過経路に沿って温度差があり,通過の始めの近傍のエタノールの過飽和分子の濃度が通過の終端近傍の濃度よりも数分の1程度に低い場合に起きることを実験的,理論的に確かめた。
Diffusion cloud chamber shows some mysterious phenomena. Although α-particles pass their whole length of the passage within 10 ns, the extension of the tracks are visible. Also, an incredible phenomenon was found that the tracks extended in the opposite direction to the passage of α-particles. The reason of the latter one was confirmed experimentally and theoretically that the temperature difference existed along the passage of α-particle and the density of the excess supersaturated molecules of ethanol near the end of the passage of α-particle was a few times larger than that near the beginning of the passage.
