Resonant Coherent Excitation, RCE, had been widely studied with swift heavy ions while “channeling” in a crystal. Since 2006, observations of a new type of RCE, three-dimensional resonant coherent excitation (3D-RCE) of randomly incident ions, became available by using high-energy heavy ions and extremely thin crystals. This paper review the recent progress of atomic physics with heavy ions developed by 3D-RCE, focusing on the experiments carried out at NIRS HIMAC.
