Clinical studies conducted at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) have demonstrated the therapeutic effect of carbon-ion radiotherapy. Still, making further improvements is an important mission of NIRS. We have, therefore, developed, since 2006, a fast 3D scanning irradiation device that compensates respiratory motion and daily motion of tumors. We have also constructed a rotating gantry using superconducting magnets capable of irradiating from all directions. Furthermore, we are conducting research concerning a compact and advanced heavy-ion radiotherapy device, which is called a quantum scalpel.
