Heavy ion synchrotron complex, HIMAC, was planned as one of the projects of “Comprehensive 10 year Strategy for Cancer Control” and constructed to treat cancers with high energy charged particles at National Institute of Radiological Sciences. The first beam from HIMAC was obtained in 1993 and treatments started in 1994 with carbon ion beams. Besides the improvements of the accelerator complex, NIRS initiated developmental researches of downsizing the therapy accelerators. New carbon therapy facilities based on the NIRS design were constructed at Gunma, Saga and Kanagawa.
