HIMAC is the medically dedicated accelerator built for the heavy ion cancer therapy. However, since National Institute of Radiological Sciences is a research institute, the facility is constructed not only to secure the medical requirements, but also to respond to the basic research related to the high energy heavy ions. The performance of HIMAC can accelerate the particles, from protons to intermediate nuclei, to high energy. Simultaneously, the facility includes many flexibilities taking into consideration the expansion of future heavy ion research.

Key words: HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba); heavy ion accelerator; heavy ion research
